As a youth, I developed a deep interest in astronomy, studying outer space at an astronomy organization in my hometown. We observed the cosmos and significant events like the transit of Venus and explored theoretical concepts such as gravity, the nature of colors and light, binary and non-binary stars, exoplanets, pulsars, and nebulas and etc. All of this gave me a perspective on our nature and existence from a physical standpoint.
Around the same time, inspired by Jostein Gaarder’s books and later on by exploring philosophy, I began to ponder how historical authorities, from the 16th century and around the time of Galileo's discoveries, kept the public's focus earthbound. As a young adult, these insights resonated with me. The advent of smartphones, which kept people occupied with their immediate surroundings, reinforced my desire to redirect attention back to the vastness of outer space.
The outcome of these thoughts was creating a series of sculptures and exhibiting them in collaboration with Mahvash Arshadi in 2012. As I progressed in life, studying architecture and dance, and exploring human-made and natural spaces on Earth, I recognized the need to connect the concepts of outer space with those of earthly existence. I believe that understanding the cosmos can offer us valuable perspectives on how to address problems here on Earth. We are, after all, an integral part of nature, born from it and intricately connected to it.
In my projects, I explore the interplay of gravity and light through the materials I use for my sculptures and the installation settings. In my recent performance, my presence within these artistic spaces is meant to investigate and celebrate this connection. Inspired by Donna Haraway's "A Cyborg Manifesto," which explores the boundaries between human and machine, organism and technology, nature and culture, I have developed a different approach that I call Nebula of Perception (NC).
Remembering the time, I observed the Horsehead Nebula (42) with a telescope and the vastness of it, the fascination, the absolute happiness, and the environment of a nebula with its characteristics, I found NC to be best fitted in the Horsehead Nebula (42) in the Orion constellation. It is a human and non-human creature that embodies these dualities in a unifying way. It carries a skin or an embodiment inspired by her nebula and has traveled to Earth to learn about us as we learn about her. This persona evolves across different projects, symbolizing the connection between the cosmic and the terrestrial.
In a fictional yet culturally resonant way, I appreciate the Afrofuturist approach, which intertwines past, present, and future with fiction. Through this lens, I create narratives that blend these temporalities from the perspective of an outsider, further enriching the persona of NC 42. Through these endeavors, I aim to merge our understanding of outer space with our lived experiences on Earth, fostering a deeper connection between the two.
